Ground Rules & Client Expectations

Horses are expected to be kept on a regular schedule. Overdue trims that result in hoof overgrowth or distortions will be charged at a higher rate, as they require additional time and work to bring back into balance.

To make sure your horse’s appointment runs smoothly and safely, please keep the following in mind:

  • Maintenance: I will always prioritize clients who keep their animals on a regular trim cycle of 4-8 weeks depending on the needs of the animal. Overdue trims that keep me chasing distortions of the hoof will have a higher rate.

  • Work area: I need a safe, covered area with flat ground to work. A clean, dry surface helps both your horse and me stay balanced and safe.

  • Horse prep: Horses must be caught, haltered, and ready at the scheduled appointment time.

  • Clean feet: Please clean off your horses hooves and lower leg if he’s muddy. This is especially important in the spring. It helps keep me from needing to raise prices. Mud ruins my tools which forces me to raise prices if I have to replace tools too often.

  • Fly management: In warm weather, fly spray is greatly appreciated. A fan is also greatly appreciated — it keeps horses (and me) comfortable and safer to work on.

  • Behavior: Horses should be halter-broke. Dangerous or unruly behavior, or pulling away of feet, may result in rescheduling or additional handling fees.

  • Payment: Payment is due upon completion of the trim or shoeing.

  • Owner presence: An adult should be present during the appointment, unless other arrangements have been agreed upon ahead of time.

  • Weather: In extreme weather (ice, storms, unsafe conditions), appointments may need to be rescheduled.

  • Cancellation policy: Cancellations less than 24 hours before the scheduled appointment will result in a cancellation fee of 20%. I greatly appreciate cancellations as early as possible so that I can offer the appointment time to someone who may need it.

These guidelines help ensure safety for your horse, myself, and anyone present — while also allowing me to provide the best possible care.

Hoof care is the foundation of every sound horse, mule, or donkey. I’m sure you’ve heard the phrase “No hoof, No horse.” of course this is true but it goes so much deeper than just the hoof. This is why I have also studied equine nutrition and pathologies of the horse.

My farrier education began with Progressive Hoof Care Practitioners (PHCP), and I’ve continued learning under farriers and veterinarians across the USA, Argentina, and France. Along the way, I’ve studied with respected teachers including Dr. Jack Gillete Jr. DVM, Dr. Hilary Clayton, Dr. Eleanor Kellon DVM, Ida Hammer, Christina Krueger, and many more.

Continued education is something I take seriously — not only for the benefit of my own herd, but so that when my community needs help, I am ready to share what I’ve spent years developing. From barefoot trimming to corrective work, my goal is to keep horses comfortable, balanced, and able to perform the jobs they were bred for.
